A

A Matter of Balance is a program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. It includes 8 two-hour sessions for a small group of 8-12 participants led by a trained facilitator.

This program is offered by Cass County Public Health.

With care and compassion, the Cass County Memorial Hospital inpatient nursing staff serves patients of all ages with varied medical needs. The experienced RNs, LPNs, and CNAs provide general inpatient care while coordinating services from many other hospital departments. This well-rounded team of professionals provides a full-spectrum of inpatient care, paying special attention to each patient’s individual medical and service needs.

Atlantic Medical Center is a rural health primary care clinic that cares for patients from birth to geriatrics. Our medical team of board-certified physicians, physician assistants and a nurse practitioner provide outstanding medical care you can count on. In addition to the Atlantic office, clinics are also staffed in Anita, Griswold, and Massena.

The Cass County Memorial Hospital Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) is a four bed psychiatric unit. The doors to the Unit are alarmed and not locked. We provide care to patients age 14 and older that have a mental health diagnosis. The BHU is committed to stabilizing patients and connecting them with appropriate resources so they can maintain both their mental and physical health. Please note, we are not equipped to detoxify patients off of substances or treat patients with significant history of physical aggression. Due to the nature of having a smaller unit, we must consider current patient population when screening potential patients. The BHU does not share available bed status with the general public. If you or a loved one is experiencing suicidal thoughts, homicidal thoughts, or having significant psychiatric symptoms, please do one of the following: contact your mental health provider, go to the nearest Emergency Room to be evaluated, or call 911.

Bone Densitometry, or  DEXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), is the standard of care to measure bone loss and diagnose osteoporosis.  The exam is quick, noninvasive and painless.

Our Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) is happy to help with any of your concerns, share techniques and answer any questions.  Our CLC also hosts a Breastfeeding Support Group on the third Thursday of every month.

Our Child Passenger Safety Technicians will inspect and help you install your child’s car seat to make sure it is safe. Car seat checks are offered during special events and by appointment.

Iowa Breast and Cervical Screening, Cardiac Screening, and Health Coaching for 40- to 65-year-old income-eligible women.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab is designed to help patients increase their fitness level in a safe, monitored environment. Each participant’s rehabilitation program is unique. Our team will work with patients, primary care providers, and cardiologists to develop personal rehabilitation plans that incorporate exercise, nutrition, lifestyle, and stress management. We offer phase II and III cardiac rehab, pulmonary rehab, and peripheral artery disease supervised exercise therapy.

Cass County Memorial Hospital is a 29-bed hospital, including medical/surgical, special care, obstetrics and behavioral health units. A full array of ancillary services provide support for the medical staff, which includes board-certified family medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, podiatry, general surgery, and orthopedic physician specialists.

Patients who are taking Warfarin, or other blood thinners, need to have the clotting rate, or INR, of their blood closely monitored.  The Coumadin Clinic at Atlantic Medical Center makes it quick and easy for patients to get the necessary labwork done so their INR can be evaluated and medication can be adjusted as necessary.

CCHS has a state- of-the-art computerized tomography (CT) scanner with certified technicians available 24/7. CT scans provide a clear and specific image of internal organs, and can view a large portion of the body. The images are produced very quickly, which can be critical in emergency situations.

Our Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian will provide the education and support you need to successfully manage your diabetes! Services include group and individual educational sessions, with ongoing support for up to a year. Clients include people newly diagnosed with diabetes as well as those who need to get long-term diabetes under control.  Most services are covered by insurance policies.

The CCHS Diagnostic Imaging department provides a full array of imaging services, including digital radiography, CT scans, MRI, ultrasound, 3D mammography, fluoroscopy and bone density.

Digital radiography provides clear images, exposes patients to less radiation and decreases patient wait time. Images are  transmitted electronically, allowing healthcare providers to view them quickly.

The staff in our Emergency Department (ED) is always ready for what’s next thanks to extensive training and experience. In a typical year, our ED staff cares for more than 5,000 patients. The ED is open 24/7 — 365 days a year. The entrance is located on the southwest side of the building.

Our optometrist at Eye Associates uses state-of-the-art diagnostic technology to treat eye disease and provide medical eye care. Our personalized service includes customized fittings of a wide selection of glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses. Eye Associates has clinics in Atlantic and Audubon.

Fluoroscopy is an image of moving body structures, like an x-ray  movie of the inside of your  body. This allows your physician to see the internal structure and function, such as the movement of your throat as you swallow. Fluoroscopy images aid in both diagnosis and treatment therapies.

Dr. Chad McCance provides general surgery care at Southwest Iowa Surgery and Cass County Memorial Hospital. His practice includes minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques when appropriate. He performs a wide array of general surgery procedures, including  colonoscopies and EGDs, bowel surgeries and resections, and tumor removals.

Nurse practitioners provide hospitalist services at Cass County Memorial Hospital. Hospitalists care for patients while they are in the hospital, while coordinating with each patients’ primary care physician. As inpatient specialists, hospitalists are able to respond quickly to any change in patient status and be accessible for patient and family needs throughout a hospital stay.

Our Rehabilitation Services department includes a pool that is used for water therapy sessions. Both physical and occupational therapists will work with patients in the therapy pool.

I

The Atlantic Medical Center Immunization Room provides immunizations and allergy treatments for patients of all ages.  No appointment is necessary, but patients do need to register in Admissions each time they visit.  The Immunization Room is open Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm, and Saturdays from 8 to 11 am.

Patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, or who need infusions, are cared for in the comfort of our Infusion Room in the CCHS Specialty Clinic. Our nursing team takes pride in the relationships they have developed with many different doctors, specialists, and hospitals around the Midwest. Our nursing team works with orders from specialists outside of CCHS, as well as our own visiting specialists. This helps save our local patients a trip out of town, and it helps us meet our goal to provide more services locally.

Interventional Radiology uses medical imaging (CT, fluoroscopy, ultrasound) to assist the radiologist while performing minimally invasive procedures, such as biopsies. During a biopsy, a small sample of tissue is removed from the body and is sent on for further testing. Some of the more common biopsies that we perform include breast, thyroid, liver, lungs, and bone marrow. We also offer radiofrequency ablation to help reduce nerve pain.

Our Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) is happy to help with any of your concerns, share techniques and answer any questions.  Our CLC also hosts a Breastfeeding Support Group on the third Thursday of every month.

The Laboratory at Cass County Health System is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by a team of experienced laboratory technicians and technologists. We are proud to have consistently earned the prestigious College of American Pathologists Accreditation every year, and our lab is Clinical Laboratory improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified.

MRI is a very precise method of imaging human anatomy. Through the use of a strong magnetic field, radio signals, and a computer, an educated technologist is able to construct anatomic images. MRI procedures do not involve radiation. MRI can be done on numerous body parts. Some of the most common scans are done
to evaluate nervous system and musculoskeletal disorders. These disorders can include multiple sclerosis, tumors, stroke, injury, and diseases affecting tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.

Nuclear medicine is provided here through the Health Partners of Southwest Iowa (HPSI). HPSI is a partnership between Cass County Health System, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, and Myrtue Medical Center. Weekly service is provided at each hospital with inpatient and emergency services provided as soon as reasonably possible. Although we are a mobile service, we are able to provide most nuclear medicine studies that in-house departments are able to provide.

Our Occupational Therapy team works with patients of all ages. Our OTs care for patients for a number of reasons including: upper extremity injuries & pain, motor coordination training, pediatric delays, stroke rehabilitation, home safety evaluations, lymphedema, activities of daily living, and cognitive testing.

Dr. Matt Weresh provides orthopedic care at Southwest Iowa Surgery and Cass County Memorial Hospital.  His services cover a wide range of orthopedic needs, including total hip and knee joint replacements, carpal tunnel surgery, and sports medicine.

Home visiting program for parents who are pregnant or have children up to kindergarten entry. Child developmental screenings, parenting education, car seat installation instruction, and group connections provided as part of the program.

PET scans use radioactive materials to show how tissues and organs are functioning and are typically used during cancer treatment. PET Scans are available on a mobile basis through Shared Medical Services.

Our Physical Therapy team includes four physical therapists and two physical therapy assistants. Our team works with patients of all ages, and they treat patients for a number of issues including: injuries & pain, balance deficits, sports injuries, joint replacements, pediatric delays, and post-concussion (return-to-sport) treatment.

Dr. Roger Drown provides podiatric, or foot and ankle surgery, care at Atlantic Medical Center and Cass County Memorial Hospital. Many patients are cared for in the clinic using a combination of medications and exercise therapies. For those with more complex issues, Dr. Drown also performs a wide range of surgical procedures.

Senior Life Solutions is our intensive outpatient group counseling program designed to meet the unique needs of older adults over the age of 65 struggling with depression and anxiety often related to aging. The program staff includes a board-certified psychiatrist, licensed social workers, a registered nurse, and other professionals dedicated to the emotional well-being of the seniors in our community.

The Siblings Class is a free class that will be held quarterly at Cass County Health System. It is geared toward children between the ages of 2 and 10 to attend with their mothers who are at or past 34 weeks of pregnancy.

Our goal is to provide a superior experience for our skilled nursing care patients and their families. That means providing all of the services they need — while also shortening their length of stay and total overall expense.

We provide multiple types of skilled nursing care including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Long-term antibiotics, and Wound, ostomy, continence (WOC). Learn more about Skilled Nursing Care with CCHS.

Patients who need a sleep study performed can be seen at Cass County Health System. Our Respiratory Care and Same Day Surgery team work together to schedule and administer these tests.

Southwest Iowa Surgery is a multi-specialty group that provides general, orthopaedic, and thoracic surgeries, along with critical care.   Dr. Chad McCance and Dr. Matt Weresh utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques whenever appropriate.  These include laparoscopic surgery, arthroscopic, MIOS (minimally invasive open surgery), and thorascopic surgery (scope surgery of the chest).

Our board-certified surgeons’ expertise includes the following areas of care:

General surgery — treatment of the neck, breast, stomach, liver and gallbladder, intestinal or GI tract, pancreas, colon and pelvic organs.  It also includes both upper and lower colon scopes (endoscopy).

Thoracic surgery — surgery of the chest including the lung, esophagus, chest wall, pleura (chest lining), heart lining and bronchoscopy (scope of the trachea and lung).

Critical care — the care of urgent and emergent patients who have life threatening or potential life-threatening illness.  These include conditions such as shock, trauma, respiratory failure, sepsis (infection), organ failure and malnutrition.

Orthopaedic surgery — hip and knee replacements, arthroscopic procedure, shoulder surgeries, carpal tunnel release, and trigger finger repairs.

Our speech/language pathologist works with patients of all ages for a variety of reasons including: Parkinson’s rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation, voice impairments, oral anomalies, pediatric speech delays, developmental disabilities, and feeding/swallowing difficulties.

During a stereotactic biopsy, a special mammography machine uses x-rays to help guide the radiologist’s instruments to the site of the abnormal growth. Stereotactic mammography pinpoints the exact location of the abnormality by using a computer and digital x-rays taken from two different angles. Using these computer coordinates, the radiologist inserts a needle through the skin, advances it into the lesion, and removes small tissue samples. This service is provided at CCHS in partnership with a mobile unit from Health Enterprises.

A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. While emergency responders will arrive as quickly as possible, bystanders are almost always there first. This free training program will teach you how to stop severe bleeding.

Wound, Ostomy, Continence (WOC) nurses provide acute and rehabilitative needs for people with selected disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary and/or integumentary system. WOC nurses provide direct care to people with abdominal stomas, wounds, fistulas, drains, pressure ulcers, and/or continence disorders. WOC nurses are Registered Nurses who hold a baccalaureate degree or higher and complete a formal, accredited WOC full scope or specialty education program.
