A
A Matter of Balance is a program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. It includes 8 two-hour sessions for a small group of 8-12 participants led by a trained facilitator.
This program is offered by Cass County Public Health.
With care and compassion, the Cass County Memorial Hospital inpatient nursing staff serves patients of all ages with varied medical needs. The experienced RNs, LPNs, and CNAs provide general inpatient care while coordinating services from many other hospital departments. This well-rounded team of professionals provides a full-spectrum of inpatient care, paying special attention to each patient’s individual medical and service needs.

Bone Densitometry, or DEXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), is the standard of care to measure bone loss and diagnose osteoporosis. The exam is quick, noninvasive and painless.

Our Child Passenger Safety Technicians will inspect and help you install your child’s car seat to make sure it is safe. Car seat checks are offered during special events and by appointment. This service is offered at no cost to the public.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab is designed to help patients improve their health after a major cardiac event in a safe, monitored environment. Our team will work with patients, primary care providers, and cardiologists to develop unique personal rehabilitation plans that incorporate exercise, nutrition, lifestyle, and stress management. We offer Phase II cardiac rehab, pulmonary rehab, and peripheral artery disease supervised exercise therapy. Ready to get started? Ask your doctor if you are eligible. The Cass Health Specialty Clinic hosts a number of cardiologists who can help patients with issues like lipid disorder, coronary artery disease, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and more. The Tyler Family Cancer Center within the Cass Health Specialty Clinic provides cancer care and chemotherapy treatments for patients in a restful, comfortable setting. Dr. Seema Harichand, Mary Mills, PA-C, Angela Lu, ARNP, and Dr. Sakeer Hussain all provide care to patients with cancer. Additionally, the nurses in the Tyler Family Cancer Center are all Oncology Nursing Society (ONS)/Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC)-chemotherapy certified.
Patients who are taking Warfarin, need to have the clotting rate, or INR, of their blood closely monitored. The Coumadin Clinic at Atlantic Medical Center makes it quick and easy for patients to get the necessary lab work done so their INR can be evaluated and medication can be adjusted as necessary.
American Heart Association CPR training classes give you the information and the skills you need to help adults, children and infants during breathing and cardiac emergencies. Cass Health has a state-of-the-art computerized tomography (CT) scanner with certified technicians available 24/7. CT scans provide a clear and specific image of internal organs, and can view a large portion of the body. The images are produced very quickly, which can be critical in emergency situations.

Cass Health’s dermatology provider, Lace Sindt, ARNP provides medical dermatology care in the Atlantic Medical Center. Lace offers a variety of dermatology care including skin checks, skin cancer screenings, acne, rashes, psoriasis, rosacea, toenail fungus, moles, warts, and other skin conditions. Optometrist Jeff Georgen provides diabetic eye exams, which is a dilated eye exam that checks for any bleeding in the eye. Call 712-243-7540 to schedule an appointment.
Digital radiography provides clear images, exposes patients to less radiation and decreases patient wait time. Images are transmitted electronically, allowing healthcare providers to view them quickly.
Developed by researchers at the University of Iowa College of Public Health, Disaster PrepWise consists of five modules and two additional sections on special topics. Participants will develop a personalized disaster management plan that they can share with their family, friends, and neighbors. Part of the planning assistance is making sure individuals are signed up to receive Alert Iowa messages. Alert Iowa is a communication tool used to inform the public about inclement weather, public safety events, or other emergencies. Planning sessions will take place at Cass County Public Health, 1408 East 10th St., Atlantic, Iowa, unless otherwise arranged. An echocardiogram (echo) is a test that uses ultrasound to make pictures of your heart. Your doctor may use an echo test to look at your heart’s structure and check how well your heart functions. This test can help show your doctor:
- The size and shape of your heart, and the size, thickness and movement of your heart’s walls..
- The heart’s pumping strength.
- If the heart valves are working correctly.
- If there is a tumor or infectious growth around your heart valves.
Cass Health’s Physical Therapist Dan Vogel, DPT is excited to offer Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) testing services. Our goal is to provide high quality service and diagnostic accuracy. This testing is widely considered to be the gold standard for identifying peripheral nerve lesions. It is useful for identifying:

- Polyneuropathies

The staff in our Emergency Department (ED) is always ready for what’s next thanks to extensive training and experience. In a typical year, our ED staff cares for more than 7,000 patients. We care for stroke, asthma, abdominal pain, electrical shock, heart attack, poison ingestion, psychiatric issues, dehydration, shock, trauma, and broken bones.
We partner with Nebraska Medicine for TeleStroke, in which a neurosurgeon can assess, diagnose and treat strokes in a time sensitive model to have better clinical outcomes.
The ED is open 24/7 — 365 days a year. The entrance is located on the southwest side of the building.

Financial assistance is available for those who meet the income guidelines, which have been recently expanded. For those who qualify, this program will pay for a portion of your hospital charges.

Fluoroscopy is an image of moving body structures, like an x-ray movie of the inside of your body. This allows your physician to see the internal structure and function, such as the movement of your throat as you swallow. Fluoroscopy images aid in both diagnosis and treatment therapies.

Dr. Chad McCance provides general surgery care at the Cass Health Surgery Clinic and Cass County Memorial Hospital. His practice includes minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques when appropriate. Dr. Benjamin Hall and Dr. Helen Fasanya-Uptagraft provide Gastroenterology care in the Cass Health Surgery Clinic. They are affiliated with Midwest Gastrointestinal Associates in Omaha, Nebraska. Patients have the right to file a complaint or grievance at any time and expect that filing such a grievance will not affect his/her future access to or quality of care. The Respiratory Therapy team at Cass Health can provide an evaluation to help you qualify for home oxygen with a diagnosis and order from your healthcare provider. Nurse practitioners provide hospitalist services at Cass County Memorial Hospital. Hospitalists care for patients while they are in the hospital, while coordinating with each patients’ primary care physician. As inpatient specialists, hospitalists are able to respond quickly to any change in patient status and be accessible for patient and family needs throughout a hospital stay.
Our Rehabilitation Services department includes a pool that is used for water therapy sessions. Both physical and occupational therapists will work with patients in the therapy pool.

The Atlantic Medical Center Immunization Room provides immunizations for patients of all ages. You can always get vaccines if you’re here for an appointment. Otherwise, walk-ins are welcome and will be accommodated as time allows. We encourage you to make an appointment to help you save time!

Patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, or who need infusions, are cared for in the comfort of our Infusion Room in the Cass Health Specialty Clinic. Our nursing team takes pride in the relationships they have developed with many different doctors, specialists, and hospitals around the Midwest. Our nursing team works with orders from specialists outside of Cass Health, as well as our own visiting specialists. This helps save our local patients a trip out of town, and it helps us meet our goal to provide more services locally.

Lithotripsy is a noninvasive procedure used to treat kidney stones that are too large to pass through the urinary tract. Lithotripsy treats kidney stones by sending focused shock waves directly to the stone. The shock waves break a large stone into pieces small enough to pass through the urinary system. For several weeks following treatment, those small fragments are passed out of the body in the urine. Lithotripsy allows people with certain types of stones to avoid invasive procedures for stone removal.

Senior Life Solutions is our intensive outpatient group counseling program designed to meet the unique needs of older adults over the age of 65 struggling with depression and anxiety often related to aging. The program staff includes licensed social workers, a registered nurse, and other professionals dedicated to the emotional well-being of the seniors in our community.

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) are noninvasive tests that show how well the lungs are functioning. The information from this test helps your provider diagnose and decide treatment of certain lung disorders, as well as monitor disease progression. The Respiratory Therapy department at Cass Health provides a variety of assessments, treatments, monitoring, and diagnostic testing of cardiopulmonary disease. Respiratory Therapy’s list of therapies includes CPAP and biPAP, ventilator management, airway management, nebulizer therapy, airway clearance, chest physiotherapy, sputum induction, oxygen therapy and trach care. Contact your primary care provider for the necessary referral information.
Rheumatology services at Cass Health are provided by Dr. Thomas Schmidt, Dr. Gino Chesini, Dr. Stephen Slade, and Dr. Matthew Samec.
All four treat patients with osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, scleroderma, psoriatic arthritis, and vasculitis among other systemic rheumatology conditions.
All new rheumatology patients will need a referral from their primary care provider.

The Siblings Class is a free class that will be held quarterly at Cass Health. It is geared toward children between the ages of 2 and older to attend with their parents.

- General surgery — Dr. Chad McCance provides general surgery care including treatment of the neck, breast, stomach, liver and gallbladder, intestinal or GI tract, pancreas, colon and pelvic organs. He also can perform both upper and lower colon scopes (endoscopy).
- Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery — Dr. Rick Rinehart provides a wide variety of ear, nose, and throat services and procedures including tubes, sinus issues, lesions, and thyroid problems.
- Orthopedic surgery — Dr. Matt Weresh provides orthopedic care including hip and knee replacements, arthroscopic procedure, carpal tunnel and trigger finger repairs. Dr. Caliste Hsu is a hand and microvascular specialist and she provides endoscopic and open carpal tunnel release, treatment for arthritis of the hand and wrist, as well as repairs for traumatic injury to the tendons, nerves and arteries.
- Gastroenterology — Dr. Benjamin Hall and Dr. Helen Fasanya-Uptagraft provide gastroenterology care for conditions including ulcerative colitis, Chron’s disease, Hepatitis C, diverticulitis, and other GI issues. While in Atlantic, they will also perform colonoscopy and EGD (upper endoscopy) exams.

Ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to create images, and no radiation is involved in ultrasound imaging.

Cass Health’s Wound, Ostomy Coordinator Mandy Sievers, RN, BSN, CWON, CFCN provides wound, ostomy care in the Cass Health Specialty Clinic. Mandy provides care for different wound types including chronic, diabetic, non-healing and slow–healing wounds, as well as skin tears. She also provides ostomy services including pre– and post–operative education, complex appliance issues, and peristomal skin breakdown.
