Cass Health Answers Frequently Asked Questions about Medicare Open Enrollment

November 2, 2026

Atlantic, IA — Medicare Open Enrollment is currently underway and continues through December 7, 2026. During this time, people with Medicare can review and make changes to their health and prescription drug coverage, with changes taking effect January 1, 2027.

“This is an important time to review your current coverage, compare available options, and select a plan that best meets your needs,” said Kolton Hewlett, Chief Financial Officer at Cass Health. “Approximately 460 Cass County residents are enrolled in Medicare plans that will be discontinued or no longer offered locally in 2027. With these changes in mind, we’ve put together answers to frequently asked questions on our website to help people make informed decisions. We also encourage anyone needing assistance to schedule an appointment with a SHIIP counselor as soon as possible.”

These changes may affect both individuals enrolled in Medicare Advantage and those with Original (traditional) Medicare who have a separate Part D prescription drug plan. During open enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries can switch Medicare Advantage plans, change Part D prescription drug plans, move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or return to Original Medicare. When comparing plans, individuals should consider coverage, costs, prescription drug benefits, and whether their providers and hospitals are in the plan’s network.

Volunteers with the Senior Health Insurance Information (SHIIP) Program are also available to help. SHIIP volunteers provide one-on-one insurance counseling and free help to Medicare-eligible individuals, their families, and caregivers. To make an appointment with a SHIIP volunteer, please call 712-243-7555 and leave a message. One of the volunteers will then contact you about scheduling.
