Yes Virginia, there is a hospital pharmacy department
Many times when people ask me where I work I get the response “I didn’t know there was a pharmacy in the hospital.” Yes Virginia, there is. We are not the pharmacy that you go buy your prescriptions from (outside Atlantic Medical Center), but we are the pharmacy next to the gift shop that provides all the medications you take while you are in the hospital. We do that and so much more. By the time you have taken your first medication or had an IV inserted into your arm, we have reviewed all your medications for drug interactions, allergies, and correct doses. A pharmacist is a drug information expert and we do provide information to many of the healthcare providers in the hospital, including suggesting a medication for a particular diagnosis.
