Wilcox Reflects on 35 Years


The year was 1981 and a young couple, fresh out of medical residency training, was looking for a small town in Iowa to call home. After looking throughout the state, they chose Atlantic as the perfect spot to build their careers and raise a family. 35 short years later, Dr. Tressa Wilcox is retiring from practice on November 18, 2016.

A hometown girl and daughter of Dr. Dwain Wilcox, some people may not have been surprised when Dr. Wilcox and her husband, Dr. Ken Burkhart, decided to practice in Atlantic. It was however a bit of surprise to them! “We didn’t plan to come back to Atlantic,” she explained. “But after we searched throughout the state it was clear Atlantic was the best fit for us.” They were looking for an independent hospital in a small town. They also liked that Atlantic Medical Center (AMC) was bigger than most private medical practices at the time, and provided a strong group of physicians for them to join.
