Colonoscopies Save Lives

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, so I felt it was particularly timely that a recent study on the subject was published by The Cancer Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York. For many years doctors have been encouraging patients to undergo colonoscopy to help detect colon cancer early and find polyps to hopefully prevent cancer. It seems logical, but it had not actually been proven. There had been some controversy that we were detecting cancers earlier, but not actually preventing cancer. This new study, however, actually confirms the effectiveness of colonoscopies. The study participants experienced an overall reduction in the incidence of colorectal cancer and were 53% less likely to die from colorectal cancer.
