American Diabetes Month: Eye Care

Atlantic, IA. — Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults according to the National Eye Institute, and during American Diabetes Month, eye care professionals urge those living with the disease to think about their eyes.

“Diabetes is a vascular disease, and your eyes are highly vascular,” said Jeff Goergen, O.D. “The longer you have this disease, or if you have poor control of your blood sugar, the more your risks of eye-related problems will increase,” said Dr. Goergen.

People with diabetes have an increased risk of developing cataracts at an earlier age, as well as facing an increased risk of certain types of glaucoma. Fluctuating blood sugar levels can also wreak havoc with eyeglass prescriptions, and diabetics are also at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy.
